October 9, 1921 - April 26, 2018

Ellen Genevieve "Gen" Christensen, age 96, of Fremont
died Thursday, April 26, 2018, at Shalimar Gardens in Fremont.

Gen was born October 9, 1921, on a farm in Mead to Henry and Lillie "Lind" Erickson. She was baptized and confirmed in Alma Lutheran Church in Mead. Her faith was always important in her life. She grew up on a farm near Mead and graduated from Mead High School in 1938. Gen attended Luther College in Wahoo for 2 years then finished her 4 years at the University of Omaha in 1965 and taught school for 30 years.

On June 1, 1947, Gen married Richard "Dick" Christensen in Alma Lutheran Church by the same minister who baptized and confirmed her. They were married for 58 years. The couple lived in Valparaiso for 3 years, and then Gen moved back with her parents when Dick was called back to serve in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. After Dick was discharged in 1952 the couple moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, then to Quebec City, Canada; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Lincoln and then Omaha, where Gen was active at St. Timothy Lutheran Church and taught in the Ralston Schools. The couple also lived in Sacramento, CA., where she was a substitute teacher, and they finally settled in Fremont in 1990.

Gen was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont and was involved in the Charity Circle and the quilters group. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was blessed to be part of a loving, caring family and enjoyed daily visits by daughters Janet and Patty and also looked forward to Friday bingo games with son-in-law Roger. She welcomed visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they always brought a smile to her face.

For the last 10 years of her life she lived happily at Shalimar Gardens Memory Support, where she was taken care of by a kind, caring, loving staff.
