Merritt A. Andreasen, better known as Andy to many, left his earthly home on Monday, April 1st, at the age of 88, in the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Merritt was born on August 20, 1935 in Fremont, NE to George & Laura (Hynek) Andreasen; baptized on Dec 13, 1959 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 11, 1969. He married Gloria (LeGrande) on November 12, 1966 in Iowa City, IA.

After graduating from Fremont High School (1953), he attended SE Community College in Milford, NE majoring in diesel mechanics. His entire work career of 54 years was with the NE Dept. of Roads beginning part-time in May 1951 at the age of 15 during his high school years. After graduating from trade school he became a full time employee working up to his last position as District 2 Mechanic Supervisor in Elkhorn, NE covering the Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion, Fremont and Blair area. Freedom living in his county was not taken for granted and he served six years in the Air National Guards (1957-1962).

Merritt was quite the handyman and was truly blessed to build, re-build, fix or maintain anything he set his mind to. He loved working on the property maintenance team at his new church Peace Lutheran Church where he was a charter member. His pride was hurt the last couple of years when his health took a change and often commented how useless he felt not serving his church.

After retiring he spent time in his shop always creating, with many hours spent on figurines made out of railroad spikes. Other hobbies in life included racing his stock car in the area, deer hunting and making trips to Texas to enjoy the company of his nephews, niece and their children.

In addition to his parents, Merritt is preceded in death by a brother, Dr. George Andreasen of Iowa City; brothers-in-law: Calvin LeGrande of Cedar Bluffs and Ernie Hammond of Carrollton, TX. Sister-in-law: MaryJane LeGrande of Cedar Bluffs; and a niece, Susan Andreasen of NYC.

Surviving family are wife Gloria; sisters-in-law Deanna Hammond of Carrollton, TX and Gorlene Jergensen (Jesse) of Waterloo, NE. Plus nephews and nieces: Rick LeGrande (Marilyn); Becky Ladenburger (Dan); Rhonda Stogner (Roland); Marty Hammond (Tiffany), Craig Hammond of Carrollton, TX; Sally Schroeder (Chris) of Carrollton, TX and their extended families.

Funeral services are 10am, Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Peace Lutheran Church east of Fremont. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Burial to follow in Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church Bldg. Fund or World Vision Hunger Relief.
