VonDeen Lee (Hurlbut) Wilson, age 93, of Fremont
Died Sunday, March 10, 2024 peacefully at home.

VonDeen was a lifelong resident of Fremont, Nebraska and a faithful member of First Lutheran Church. Born in 1930 she had a comfortable upbringing with her father working for the railroad. She graduated from Fremont Senior High, met the love of her life at the county fair, and at the ripe old age of 18 married William (Bill) Wilson. They moved around for a couple of years, finally settling in a brand new home in Fremont in 1955 when Bill got a job at Hormel. Here, their already started family continued to grow.

VonDeen was a homemaker raising 6 kids but as they grew so did her interests. She was always looking for ways to stay busy and bring in some extra money, taking her to several years at the catalog department for JC Penny. Being creative at heart she eventually opened her own craft shop, Something Special, filled with all of the latest in plaster crafts and macramé, and finishing up at Vern's Flowers.

Throughout her life VonDeen had one calling that was her true joy ……bowling…… 50 years of bowling to be exact. This joy led her at one point to bowling on four different leagues a week, 16 league championships, participated in 29 state tournaments and three WIBC national tournaments. She also twice served as alternate delegate to the annual Nebraska Women's Bowling Association meeting. All of this eventually got her inducted into the Fremont Area Bowler's Hall of Fame in 2001.

Besides all of the child-rearing, crafting, and bowling, VonDeen and Bill were always active in the First Lutheran church. For 9 years they followed the First Lutheran youth group in their camper all over the United States as traveling cooks making sure that not one of them ever went hungry, and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process.

VonDeen was preceded in death by her parents Clarence Sr. and Ruth (Becker) Hurlbut. Her brother Clarence Hurlbut Jr., her husband of 70 years William (Bill) Wilson, her son Wayne R. Wilson, and her daughter Debbie. VonDeen is survived by her daughters; Linda Lallman, Chris (Brett) Courcier, both of Fremont, and Karen Kelly (Brian Freyermuth) of Blair, her sons Gary Wilson of Eyota, Minnesota, and James (Cecily) Wilson of Pacifica, California. She also has 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

There is no viewing but the family will be present at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel Monday, March 25, 2024 from 5pm to 7pm. The memorial service will be 10:30am, Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at First Lutheran Church.

  1. LuAnn Sawyer Dritley
I was so lucky to grow up on Madison Street as neighbors to Bill and VonDeen. Karen, Chris and I spent hours inside playing Barbies and outside playing kick ball in the vacant lot next to our house. I have so many fond memories of the Wilson family. My condolences to you all. May your memories of your mom be a comfort to you at this time.
