Gerald D. 'Jerry' Verbeek, age 90, of Fremont
Died Sunday October 14, 2018 at Providence Place.

Jerry was born November 27, 1927 in Scribner, Nebraska to John and Hazel 'Nelson' Verbeek. He was raised in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School. After his schooling, Jerry embarked on a long military career that began as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army and ended after 26 years as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 helicopter pilot.

Jerry married Thelma Zorn Peterson on June 30th, 1950 in Petersburg, VA. After their marriage and Jerry's retirement in 1974, the couple moved back to Fremont so they could help Thelma's son, Richard 'Dick' Peterson raise his 3 daughters after their mother died.

Jerry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20 both of Fremont, active member of the Fremont Honor Guard, Fremont Masonic Lodge #15 A.F & A.M., Tangier Shrine Center of Omaha, Fremont Shrine Club, National Sojourners, York Rite Masonic Bodies and Scottish Rite, Jesters Court #19 of Omaha, and the Arbor Vitae Chapter 92 OES of Fremont.

Larry (Jo) Verbeek of Kansas City, MO.

15 great grandchildren

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Thelma in 2002, parents, step-sons Robert (Jean) and Richard (Shirley and Debbie) Peterson, 2 great grandchildren Ashlea Sukstorf and Natalie Sacco, Brothers Lyle (Pat), Gene and Jack Verbeek, sister Joyce (Dale) Norby, and brothers-in-law Duwain Reker and Marvin Hoeneman.

The funeral will be 10:30am Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating, burial with Military Honors by the Fremont Honor Guard will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation will be at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel will be Wednesday from 3pm to 7:30pm with the family present from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. A Masonic Service open to the public will be held at 7:30pm also at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Fremont Honor Guard (VFW Post 854 & American Legion Post 20)

    I am just see of Jerry's passing. Please accept my sympathies.
    My dad was Irvin Gaughenbaugh, who passed away on July 4, 2010. Daddy and Jerry were very good friends and Daddy spoke very fondly of his friend Jerry.
