Bernard H. Stumpe, age 92 of Scribner
Died Friday, May 10 at the Hooper Care Center.

Bernard Henry Stumpe was born October 10, 1926 on the family farm northwest of Hooper, Nebraska to Ervin and Alwine (Iburg) Stumpe. He was baptized at home by Rev. H. O. Rhode and confirmed at St Paul's Lutheran Church by Rev Hugo H.F. Welchert. He grew up on the family farm, attended grade school at rural District #18 and graduated from Scribner High School in 1944. After graduation, he received a farm deferment and helped his father on the farm. On November 21, 1948 he married Bernice Vivian Fehrer and took over the farming operation; Bernard farmed until he and Bernice moved to Scribner in 1990. They were the parents of five children, Marlene, Leroy, Joanne, Dennis, and Myron.

With a growing family, Bernard began an off-the-farm job in 1963 as a set up mechanic with Burnell Nelson at Scribner Service and later with Scribner Implement and Dinkel Implement. While at Scribner Implement, he had the opportunity to attend New Idea tech schools which lead to many years as a baler mechanic. He opened his own business, Bernard's Repair, in 1985 which he operated until 2009.

Bernard enjoyed doing mechanical repair work, restoring tractors, and tinkering of all kinds. He served as the Building Inspector for the City of Scribner for many years, the official Scribner weather reporter for the US Weather Service for 20 years, a 4-H leader, and Sunday School teacher. He also served as a board member of District #18 and the St Paul's Church Council. In retirement, he enjoyed playing cards, traveling to visit family, making and flying model airplanes, and woodworking. A handmade sign on the wall of his repair shop read Do Not Be Afraid Be of Good Cheer, the very motto he lived by.

He is survived by two daughters and two sons, Marlene (Randy) Geiger of Ames, IA and Joanne (Ed) Howard of Mesa, AZ, Dennis (Polly) Stumpe, Scribner, NE and Myron (Denise) Stumpe, Hooper, Nebraska, and daughter-in-law, Rose Stumpe, Sioux Falls, SD; brothers Lorence (Vernice) Stumpe, Scribner, NE and Marvin (Karen) Stumpe, Oklahoma City, OK; sister-in-law, Doris Fehrer, Lyons, NE and brother-in-law, Melvin (Judy) Fehrer, West Point, NE; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, son Leroy, and great grandsons Christopher and Tristin Rippentrop.

The funeral will be 10:30am Saturday May 18 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Hooper. Rev. Judith Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will be Friday May 17 at Ludvigsen's Scribner Funeral Chapel with the family present from 5pm to 8pm.
