Marlyn G. Grubbs, age 82, of Fremont, formerly of Schuyler died early Sunday in the Hooper Care Center, Hooper, NE
He was born September 25, 1932 in Fremont to Jennings and Frieda (Reker) Grubbs. In 1946, he moved with his family to Schuyler where his father started a grocery store. Marlyn graduated from Schuyler High School and worked in his father's store, later taking over ownership of the business. Marlyn built a new store in 1962 and operated it until selling in 1981.
Marlyn worked for the Pawnee Scout and Columbus Telegram for a time, then went on road with the Dick Wickman Band traveling to various locations in the United States, Europe, Hong Kong, Iceland, and other countries. The Dick Wickman Band also became the successor to the Jan Garber Band. Marlyn traveled with the band until 1987. He also had the Marly G Trio for 12 years. Marlyn and his wife Jane started the Nebraska Advertising Co. which they ran until moving to Fremont in 2010 to be nearer to his doctors and the Medical Center.
His memberships include 50 years in the United Methodist Church, charter member of the Schuyler Historical Society and the ODD Fellows, President of Schuyler Chamber of Commerce several times, Schuyler Board of Public Works (1966 to '79) Schuyler Ambassadors, 50 year member of the Schuyler Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, Tangier Shrine Center of Omaha, Tangier Shrine Band, Tangier Road Runners (transport area children to Shrine Hospitals), and Schuyler Shrine Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Patricia Spence and brother Robert (killed in WW II Battle of the Bulge). Marlyn was later married to Jane Vrana.
Survivors; wife Jane, children Royann (Mark) Schmiedeskamp of Lincoln, Jina (Glenn) Huebert of Hampton, Mike (Susan) Grubbs of Winfield, Tex, Patric Grubbs of Norfolk, Daniel (Inez) Vrana of Fremont, Diane (Gene) Valish of Fremont, Theresa Vrana and Shane Nelson of Elkhorn, Iowa, Kenneth (Minja) Vrana of Stillwell, Kansas, Darian (Kenneth) Fischer of Cincinnati, Ohio; numerous grand and great grandchildren, niece Judy (Robert) McClure of Bella Vista, Ark.
A memorial service will be 2 PM Friday in Hooper at the Faith United Methodist Church. Marlyn's favorite music will be played at the church Friday beginning at 1:15 PM. There will be visitation with the family in Fremont at the Ludvigsen Mortuary on Thursday from 6 PM until 7 PM, followed by a Masonic Service by Schuyler's Acacia Lodge (open to the public). Private family committal will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont. Memorials are suggested to the Tangier Transportation Fund (transport area children to Shrine Hospitals).
