Melvin R. Brooks

Melvin was born January 6, 1926 in Elk City, NE. The family farmed in the Arlington area, and he graduated from Arlington High School. He met the love of his live, Yvonne Holbrook, and they were married in 1947. To this union were born three sons: David, Steve, and Kirk. They celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary before she died in 2010. The couple lived and farmed in the Fremont area. They were very active with 4-H and raised and showed sheep. He was the 4-H Superintendent for twelve years, and was honored for his service by being named the 4-H Fair Grand Marshall. The couple retired from farming in 1987 and moved to town.
Melvin served in the U.S. Army from January 1945 to November 1946. He was so proud of being a veteran.
Melvin was a very active member of the First Congregational Church in Fremont. He had also been president of the American Hampshire Association.
Melvin loved his family more than anything. Holidays and family get-togethers meant so much to him. He especially loved to be around his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always attended their programs, musical concerts, and sporting events.
Survivors include son Kirk and wife Judy Brooks of Fremont; and daughter-in-law Deb Brooks of Fremont. Grandchildren include Amy and husband Gus Kohtz of Omaha; Amanda and husband Jake Hansen of Tekamah; Ryan and wife Sarah Brooks of Fremont; Mikala and husband Wally Thompson of Fort Collins, CO; and Kelvin Brooks and fiancé Alexandra Andersen of Omaha. Great-grandchildren are Stella and Asher Kohtz; Lily and Emma Hansen; and Beckett and Mareck Thompson. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Jack and wife Norah Holbrook of Tacoma, WA.; Niels Christensen of Tacoma, WA.; and sisters-in-law Violette Elliott of Des Moines, IA.; Kate and husband Rob Miner of San Bernadino, CA.: Bette Tatum of Honolulu, HI.; and Marilyn King of Fremont. He has many nieces, nephews and friends that will miss him.
Melvin is preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne, sons Steven Brooks and David Brooks, two brothers and his sister.
The celebration of his life will be held Monday June 18, 2012 at 10:00am at the First Congregational Church, UCC in Fremont. The committal will be in Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. There will be a gathering of friends and family on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Ludvigsen Mortuary from 2pm to 4pm.
