Verona E. Bittner

Verona Emma Bertha Werner Bittner, age 93, of Fremont; passed away peacefully, Tuesday (March 11, 2014) in the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
She was born September 21, 1920 in Beemer, Nebraska to Robert and Minnie (Loewe) Werner. She grew up on farms in the Beemer/Wisner area. She attended country school district #9 near Wisner then attended Wisner High School. She worked at the Wisner Hotel for 3 years.
On May 31, 1940, Verona married Earl S. 'Barney' Bittner. They lived in the Wisner area for many years, moving to Fremont in 1954. Verona worked for Campbell Soup in Fremont and retired after 20 years there. She and her husband also owned many rental houses in Fremont.
Verona was a wonderful Mom, Grandmother, and Mother-in-Law. She was an excellent cook and made THE BEST red velvet cakes, oatmeal raisin cookies and canned dill pickles. She did beautiful embroidery, crocheting and quilt making.
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl, after 62 years of marriage, by her parents Robert and Minnie Werner, a sister Arline Bossow, her 3 sons, Gene, Jim, and Jack Bittner, and her son-in-law Capt. Robert Watterson.
Surviving are her daughters, Joan Watterson of Mobile, AL., and Gerri Nohr of San Diego, CA, daughters-in-law, Renee Bittner of Elkhorn, NE, and Joan Bittner of Tonganoxie, KS, and sister Sylvia (and husband Max) Borgmeyer of Fremont. Her grandchildren are Robb (Kim) Watterson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL., Heather (Dr. Curt) Miramonti of Chesterfield, MI., Holly (Arrington) Widemire of Madison, MS., John (Jenny) Watterson II of Houston, TX., TiaLisa and Suzalyn Bittner of Elkhorn, NE., Mike Bittner of Fremont, Scott (Catherine) Bittner of Arlington, TX., Earl S. (Shelley) Bittner II of Hampton, VA., Kelly (Doug) Sandburg of Tonganoxie, KS., Roxanne (Tommy) Woodroof of St. Robert, MO., Andrew (Jenna) Nohr of San Diego, CA., Melissa (Wesley) Remley of Jacksonville, FL.. Verona also has 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the 300 wing of Merrick Manor, who took such wonderful care of our Mom. We especially wish to thank her nurses, Carla and Barb, who were so caring of her. She also enjoyed several nice years at Shalimar Gardens.
The funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday (March 20, 2014) at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. David Coe. Visitation will be at the church Thursday morning for an hour before the service. (No visitation at the funeral home). The committal will follow in Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church.
