Sue Guyer Otteman
December 29, 1933 - October 1, 2018

Sue Guyer Otteman, age 84, died in Houston, Texas, October 1, 2018 after complications from heart surgery. She was surrounded by family and told them prior to her operation, "I love you all."

Sue was born December 29, 1933 in Findlay, Ohio to James (Jimmie) and Garnett Guyer. Her father passed when she was just fifteen months old, and from then on she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Ruby and Dr. John Smith. The family moved frequently during WWII, as John was a Doctor in the Army. They eventually returned home to Ohio, where she lived through High School.

In 1955, Sue graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Business Education, an especially impressive accomplishment at a time when just 6% of the female U.S. population held a college degree. She then headed west to join her mother and sister in Fresno, California and soon moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a secretary for Travelers Insurance and roomed with a good college friend. As fate would have it, Lloyd Gilbert Otteman was living in their same apartment complex. The couple married on May 3, 1958, and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the company of her family.
Living in Houston, TX in 1960, Sue became one of the first patients to undergo open-heart surgery and be placed on a heart-lung machine, when pioneering heart specialist Dr. Cooley successfully repaired a congenital defect.

Sue lived on to have and raise three children, make eight more moves across the country, fine tune her home décor and holiday decorating skills, and develop an endless passion for collecting. An avid glass collector, her homes were filled with the elegant beauty of her collections and the passion with which she presented them never ceased to impress guests. Her enthusiasm for card games was well documented and matched only by her close club friends. Perhaps most of all, Sue was a pet lover. She treasured her beloved Siamese cats and grew to love Lloyd's many hunting dogs.

Later in life Sue thrived in her role as an amazing grandmother, following the busy lives and happenings of every one of her grandchildren with great care. Her warmth and unconditional love will live on in each of them. She embraced technology, texting or Facebooking family and friends on a daily basis. She never missed a birthday and cherished special events. Even as travel grew more difficult, she pushed to make it to California for grandson graduations and Eagle Scout ceremonies, as well as Seattle, Virginia and Michigan trips for extended family celebrations, not to mention countless trips and family gatherings to their second home in Nebraska.

Sue is survived by her husband Lloyd, son Timothy John Otteman and Cynthia Gale Fisher, daughter Sharon Sue McHenry and Jeffery Robert McHenry, daughter Julie Ann McNeill and Thomas E McNeill, granddaughter Madeline Marie Otteman, grandsons Peter John Otteman, Taylor Lotton, Tyler Jeffery McHenry, Neil Lloyd McHenry, Henry Thomas McNeill, and William John McNeill, sister Marge Guyer Rutledge, brother-in-law Kenneth Otteman, her cat Angel and her dog Oreo. She will be missed immensely by all those who knew her including her immediate family, numerous relatives and close friends.

She is predeceased by her sisters-in-law Twilla Otteman and Anna Lu Otteman Melvedt, brother-in-law Don Melvedt, granddaughter Samantha Ann McHenry and many wonderful pets.

Wednesday November 21, 2018 11:00am at Redeemer Lutheran Church (601 East Fulton Street, Hooper Nebraska, 68031). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either church, the American Heart Association or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
