LeRoy D. Poppe, age 87, of Scribner, Nebraska
Died Friday, June 30, 2023, at Providence Place in Fremont

LeRoy Poppe was created by Almighty God and born to Carl and Clara (White) Poppe on October 31, 1935, on the farm north of Scribner, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church County Line and was a graduate of Scribner High School, class of 1952. He attended Midland College for a year before joining the United States Air Force, where he served from 1954 to 1958. LeRoy married his high school sweetheart, Janis Johnson, on May 8, 1955, at St. John's Ridgeley Lutheran Church.

After their marriage, LeRoy and Janis lived in Japan while he finished his military service. They returned to the family farm where he raised sheep, cattle and hogs. They raised vegetables for Country Pathways and had a greenhouse and a pumpkin patch under the name Rooster Lake. The farm has continued to be in the Poppe family for over 100 years.

LeRoy served on the District 36 School Board, St. John's Lutheran Church County Line council, was a 4-H leader, a member of the VFW and American Legion, and President of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Scribner. In his younger years, LeRoy bowled and played baseball and softball. He was an avid fisherman and hunter; his family considered him an excellent shot with a rifle. He had many trophy mounts, including several species taken in Alaska in 1983. LeRoy was a wood carver and also did chainsaw carvings. He was a member of the Pathfinders Woodcarvers for many years.
