Leonard was born on December 2, 1928, in Burt County, NE to Edward and Ida Meyer. He was baptized on January 13, 1929 and confirmed on August 23, 1942. He attended rural District #35 grade school and graduated from Scribner High School in 1946. On July 9, 1950, Leonard married Audrey Hasemann at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Hooper. He and Audrey were the parents of twin sons and were married for 69 years.

Upon returning in 1953, he farmed for many years. In 1981, he started Meyer Electric, servicing the Scribner area for 25 years before retiring in 2006.

Leonard was a proud member of the Scribner American Legion Post 121, served on the Scribner-Snyder School board, and was a lifelong member and former council member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
