Freida was born December 27, 1922 in Van Buren County, Iowa to Manley and Hazel 'Shampnoi' Pratt. She was raised and attended rural schools in Van Buren County. After her schooling she did house work for several people in the area. Freida was married to Gerald 'Jerry' Hocking on October 12, 1939 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in Ft. Madison for eight years and then move to Lincoln, NE. so Jerry could attend aviation mechanic school. The couple then moved to Scribner and finally to Hooper.

Freida attended Bahner's Beauty School in Fremont and then opened a beauty salon in Hooper which she ran for about 20 years. After the beauty salon Freida worked with her husband and did the books for Standard Oil, then the couple operated the Dairy Bar where the Hooper Senior Center is now.

I knew of Frieda even before I ever her met her. Barb and Mike McNelly told me about their visits with her when they traveled through Hooper. They both liked her very much. I was not surprised when years later after Barb passed that Mike and Frieda began seeing each other. Frieda was so good to Mike and it was evident they both loved spending their time with each other. I enjoyed their visits to me in Ca. Once we vistied a casino (neither Frieda nor Mike were gamblers but they were always willing to be on the go and accomodating to what other people wanted to do). The casino was giving out free tshirts. Mike got one and then went to get Frieda so she could get one too. He asked the lady at the booth if Frieda could get one too. The lady asked if she were his wife and he said "I would like that very much". That showed how much Mike loved and respected her. Later when I would fly back for the Kramer Christmas, I would drive to Hooper, pick up Frieda and drive to Des Moines or Council Bluffs for the event. Frieda was a special part of our Christmas tradition and fit in so well with the Kramer family. I always looked forward to our trips together. When we returned to Hooper, Kathy would ride with us and we all had such a good time. I will miss those times more than anyone would ever know. I will miss Frieda's calls checking on how I was doing. I will miss Frieda as I felt she was another member of the family. Thank you to the Hocking Family for sharing such a wonderful person with my family. We all share in your loss as it is ours too.
