Vernon died peacefully at home surrounded by his immediate family on Monday March 7, 2011. He was born on February 5, 1939 in West Point to Otto and Martha 'Engelbrecht' Koester. Vernon was raised on the farm that has been in his family for over 135 years southwest of Scribner. He attended District 66 School and Scribner High School before leaving school to farm. Vernon continued to farm until he retired because of health in 2003.

Vernon married Marian Weber on February 21, 1960 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner. He was a past member of the District 12 School Board, Scribner Co-op Board of Directors and presently a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner.

Wife - Marian of Scribner
Son - Steve of Seward
2 Daughters - Diane of Norfolk and Joann of Columbus
a Granddaughter and a great grandson both of Columbus
2 Sisters - Darlene Schwinck of West Point
Norma and husband Norman Tonjes of Scribner
Brother-in-law - Rev. Charles Weber of Missouri

Vernon was preceded in death by a daughter Donna in 2003, his parents and a brother-in-law Delwin Schwinck.

The funeral will be 2pm Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner. The Rev. Bruce Schut will officiate. Burial will follow in the Scribner Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Scribner Volunteer Fire Department and the Scribner Rescue Squad. Visitation will be at the Scribner Funeral Chapel on Thursday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm. Visitation will continue 1 hour before the service at the church.
