Delbert was born to Hiley and Ethel (Earith) Barrett on the farm near Tabor, Iowa on January 26, 1918. He grew up in southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska.

On September 22, 1940, Delbert was married to Lola Abbott in Hamburg, Iowa. They made their home in Nebraska City, Nebraska until moving to Fremont in 1967. Early in his working years, he worked on WPA projects, then for a hatchery in Nebraska City, and then for the Hubbard Milling Co. there. He came to Fremont with the Hubbard Milling Co. and retired from that company in 1980. In his retirement years, Delbert worked on the farm for Carson Day. While working for Hubbard and Carson Day, he also had a feeder pig operation.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Fremont. He was a member of Western Star Masonic Lodge No. 2, A.F. & A.M. and the Elks Lodge, both of Nebraska City. He had been a member of the Eagles in Nebraska City and also in Fremont. And he was a member of the United Commercial Travelers of America.
Delbert had also been active in the Fremont Friendship Center (formerly the Senior Citizens Center). He had been an avid bowler and a card player.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lola in October of 1998, and by 6 brothers and 2 sisters.

The funeral service will be 10 AM Saturday (Nov. 27th, 2010) at the First Christian Church, Fremont, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Visitation will be on Friday (Nov. 26th) at the Ludvigsen Mortuary, Fremont, from 2 to 8 PM, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Fremont Friendship Center. The committal will be in the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City at 2 PM Saturday with a Masonic Graveside Service.
