Yvonne was born 7/20/27 in Braddyville, IA. The family moved to Fremont when she was 15, and she graduated from Fremont High School in 1944. She met the love of her life, Melvin Brooks and they were married in 1947. They recently celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary. The couple lived and farmed in the Fremont area. She loved being a stay-at-home mother, taking care of her three sons and helping on the farm. They were very active with 4-H and raised and showed sheep. When her boys were all in school, she became the office manager at the Dodge County Extension Office. She retired in 1993.

Yvonne was a very active member of First Congregational Church in Fremont. She served on many committees and held multiple offices on the Church Board and in the Women's Fellowship. She loved to volunteer and spent time every Saturday morning at FAMC. She was also a longtime member of an Extension Club in Fremont.

Yvonne loved her family more than anything. Holidays and family get-togethers meant so much to her. She especially loved to be around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always attended their programs, musical concerts, and sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin; son Kirk Brooks and wife Judy of Fremont; daughter-in-law Deb Brooks of Fremont. Grandchildren include Amy Kohtz and husband Gus of Omaha; Amanda Hansen and husband Jake of Blair; Ryan Brooks and wife Sarah of Fremont; Mikala Thompson and husband Wally of Fort Collins, CO; and Kelvin Brooks of Omaha. Great-grandchildren are Stella and Asher Kohtz; Lily and Emma Hansen; and Beckett Thompson. She is also survived by her brother Jack Holbrook and wife Norah of Tacoma, WA: sisters Rubie Lee of Seattle, WA: Violette Elliott of Des Moines, IA; Kate Miner and husband Rob of San Bernadino, CA; and Bette Tatum and husband Lon of Honolulu, HI. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Marilyn King of Fremont, and Joyce Christensen and husband Niels of Tacoma, WA. She has many nieces, nephews, and friends that will miss her.

Yvonne is preceded in death by her parents, sons Steven Brooks and David Brooks, and 4 brothers-in-law.

The celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 am at First Congregational Church in Fremont. There will be a gathering of friends and family on Friday, April 30 at Ludvigsen Mortuary from 2:00 to 8:00; family will be available from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church or the donor's choice.

  1. Marlene Stumpe Geiger
I just recently learned of Yvonne's passing and am so sorry for your loss. It has indeed been many years, but I enjoyed working with her in the early 70s at the Dodge County Extension Office where I interned for three summers. Prior to that, I remember your family's involvement with 4-H. It was my privilege to have known and worked with her. Marlene Geiger

Yvonne was the jewel of the family. A cornerstone. One that will be missed with all our hearts. So proud of her and privileged to have known her. Love you always.

i can not believe Aunt Yvonne is gone. My memories of her are mostly at her farm in Fremont. Aunt Yvonne was always the quiet one. My thoughts are with Uncle Melvin, Kirk and the rest of the family.

Yvonne was like a mother to me and her younger siblings in the late 30's and early 40's in Clarinda, IA. I remember her playing the clarinet and wearing the uniform for the Clarinda HS band and marching in town. She began teaching me to read when I was around 5, at my insistence. If there were childish problems, we went to Vonnie. God bless you, Yvonne, and greet you in heaven with open arms. Love, Marilyn

I am so sorry to hear of Yvonne's passing. I don't know what we will do without at church. Yvonne meant so much to me. I will always cherish the time I spent working with her at church. She is in a better place now, I sure that Steve and David were waiting at heaven's gate for her arrival. For now don't cry because she died, but smile because she loved you all so very much. Don't cry because she died, but smile because she loved life. Don't cry because she died but smile at your memories of her. Don't cry because she died just smile because she is smiling down to you from heaven.
