Leola was born April 22, 1933 to Lester and Rosalie (Pueppke) Schafersman on their farm home in Washington County. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper. She was a faithful member there and at Redeemer Lutheran Church after the churches merged. Leola attended Hewitt School Number 17 in her elementary years and graduated from Hooper High School in 1950. She attended Midland College and Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing. Leola received her RN Degree and worked at Dodge County Hospital/Fremont Area Medical Center for 40 years. Known as "Schaf" by her co-workers she retired in 1995.

Leola enjoyed her retirement years traveling throughout Europe and visiting her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed riding her horses Doc and Zad. She spent many hours baking bread, cinnamon rolls, and her famous molasses cream cookies for her family and neighbors. She was secretary for the Hooper Saddle Club and always took great pride in working concessions at the yearly Hooper Horse Show. She was secretary for many years of the Logan Cemetery Board. Leola will be greatly missed by her Bible Study Friends "The Word Girls". Leola found great joy in her many nieces and nephews and found importance in remembering each of them on their birthdays and Valentine's Day. Each Easter everyone could plan on a grand Easter Egg Hunt.

  1. Susan Henneman
Leola was a good friend and neighbor to my parents, LaVere and Wilma Henneman in Hooper during their retirement. May she rest in peace.
  2. Janet Muller
Schaf oriented me back in 1980. She was an excellent nurse and I enjoyed working with her. She never hesitated to state her mind and that is what I most liked about her.
Her patients always got great care.

Nurse "Shaf" took care of my husband several times. What a wonderful lady and excellent nurse. I can still see her in her white nurses dress and her starched cap. They don't make nurses like her any more. I remember her calling me at home while my husband was in hospital. Scared me, but she said bring him some pajamas or something cheerful. We need to cheer him up. How blessed we were to have her in our lives. She was the best!!
