died Sunday (Dec. 8, 2013) in the
Good Samaritan Center, Scribner.
LaVern Kull was born on January 18, 1923 to William H. and Tillie (Peters) Kull on a farm west of Scribner. He attended country school and Scribner Public School until the family moved to Hooper and finished his education at Hooper Elementary and High School. After graduating in 1940, he worked for grocery stores in Hooper and Wahoo, until moving to California.
On his 20th birthday, LaVern received his "invitation from the President of the United States" to join the armed forces. He returned to Nebraska and enlisted in the Army Air Corps, graduating from cadet school in 1943. During WWII, he served overseas as a C-47 pilot, flying 42 night supply missions from Italy to Yugoslavia. Following V-E day, he flew troops home from Brazil to Florida.
After military life, LaVern taught flying lessons around Oakland, Neb. and worked for Dau Brothers in Hooper, before becoming a farmer. He married Leola L. Grieser on October 6, 1948 at United Lutheran Church. LaVern and Leola raised their three children on a farm west of Scribner. In 1985, LaVern retired from farming, moved to Scribner and worked at Scribner Grain for a number of years.
LaVern was a member of United Lutheran Church in Scribner and served on the church council. He was on the District 29 school board and a member of the Scribner American Legion. He had a love of baseball and played on the Scribner and Hooper town teams, as well as coached his daughters' softball teams. He also enjoyed being a member of multiple bowling leagues until his later years.
LaVern is survived by his brother Clinton Kull of Garden Grove, California; son Jim and wife Marnell Kull of Alameda, California, daughter Joy and husband Thomas Meyer of Scribner, Nebraska; daughter Jeanne Bryant of Aurora, Nebraska; grandchildren Tim and wife Angie Meyer, Sarah Meyer, Katie Meyer, Jason Bryant; step-grandchildren Derek Contreras, Damian and wife Elizabeth Contreras, Daryn Contreras; great-grandchildren Emmale, Ivy, Gabriel, Jackson, Thomas and Sevina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Leola, two brothers; Clifford and Gene, and sister, Burnette Haller.
Memorials are suggested to the United Lutheran Church.
The funeral service will be 1pm Saturday, December 14 at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. Burial will follow in the Scribner Cemetery with Military Honors by Scribner American Legion Post 121. Visitation at Ludvigsen's Scribner Funeral Chapel will be Friday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 7pm.
