He was born November 6, 1931 at home to Edwin and Johanna 'Schole' Tonjes. He graduated from Scribner High School in 1950. He served in the Air Force from June 15, 1951 until June 1955.
He married Mary Ann Wollmer on April 25, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church in Hooper. He was in the house moving business for 50 some years.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving on the church council. He also served on the Parkview Housing Board, Dodge County Veterans Board, Hooper Volunteer Fire Department and the Elkhorn Valley Golf Club Board. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 18 and former commander. Gene was also a lifetime member and Chef Passe of Voiture 1018 of the 40 & 8.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years Mary Ann, son Mark and wife Kendall Tonjes of Lincoln; daughters Jane and husband Joe Camenzind of Wichita, Kansas; Susie and husband Steve Hultgren of Fremont, sister Marlene and husband Gary Moeller of Arlington, MN. Gene is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Matt and Megan Tonjes; John, Ryan, Mark and Jacob Camenzind; Josh and Taylor Dahl. Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
Gene was a kind and gentle man. He was a mentor to many. Gene loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved golf and was a loyal husker fan.
The memorial service will be Saturday December 21 at 10:30am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper, with the Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Military Honors will be rendered at the church following the service. Visitation with the family will be Friday December 20 at Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel from 5pm to 8pm. Burial will be at a later date in the Hooper Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hooper Volunteer Fire Department and the Hooper Care Center.
