Mary Lou was born March 11, 1927 in Uehling, Nebraska to Alfred and Marie 'Borcherding' Hoganson. She lived in Uehling until the age of 12. She and her family moved to Fremont and she graduated from Fremont High School in 1944. Mary Lou worked at Schwesers, Hormels and the telephone company and then married Dale Hespen on August 24, 1950. They lived on the family farm and in their later years had a motor route for the Fremont Tribune. Dale died on October 23, 2007, and then Mary Lou moved to Elkhorn.

Mary Lou was a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont. She was also involved in the activities of the class of 1944 and was a former member of the Sugar-n-Spice Extension Club.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her parents and a brother Willard.

The funeral will be 1:30 P.M. Thursday at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Michael Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Salem and the American Heart Association. Visitation will be Wednesday at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm. Visitation will continue 1 hour before the service at the church.
