Jack was born August 30, 1925 in Fullerton, Nebraska to Leonard and Nell 'Slifer' Legler. He was raised on a farm in the Fullerton/Belgrade area. Jack moved to Schuyler in 1938 and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1943. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. Jack was a proud WWII Veteran serving from 1943 to 1946 spending time in the Pacific theater. After his military service Jack went to the University of Nebraska Lincoln and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in Agriculture.

On June 21, 1952 Jack married Marcy Svec at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. The couple lived in several different communities while Jack sold commercial fertilizer for Phillips Petroleum. In 1970 they moved to Fremont and bought the A & W Drive Inn on Bell Street. He retired from A & W and went back to selling commercial fertilizer before retiring.

Jack was a member of American Legion Post 20 in Fremont. His favorite place to go was the Fremont Friendship Center and the Fremont Public Library. He was an avid Husker fan and season ticket holder since 1959.
