I was in Cathy's first 6th grade class in Stromsburg. She was such a great teacher, and we thought her rainbow top and ponytails on Friday were so cool! We got to rearrange desks every Friday and I'm pretty sure she's a large part of why I became a teacher. I also had her as a synchronized swimming coach for two summers. What an adventure that was, and something we would never have been able to do if she hadn't come to Polk County! When I was teaching 6th grade, she was still teaching and we did a pen-pal project together. I know she impacted a lot of lives and I feel so privileged to have had her in my life. She made the room at the end of the north hall at Stromsburg Elementary a very cool place to learn!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Cathy's family. Cathy and I taught together for many years at Stromsburg. We have remained in contact throughout the years. She fought until the very end and was very compassionate about everyone.

I was so sorry to hear about Cathy's passing. We had lived across the street from the Hollins on Geath Ave and she babysit for us when we were growing up. She was fun and caring and have only great memories.

To the family of "Miss Hollins"

I (and to many others) will always have fond memories of our sixth grade teacher back in Stromsburg. Cathy helped develop our minds to become something greater. I will always remember her for her ability to write, in cursive, upside down. We also played many word games as a class. She was also instrumental in challenging our computer skills. We also learned to enjoy various songs by Manheim Steamroller. I also recall a field trip to see a train collection and one to Memorial Stadium.

Aside from being my teacher, I had the privilege of running into Cathy as an adult living in Fremont. She would always ask how my parents were doing, especially after knowing our family battles with Cancer. She took the time to care. I am afraid that my husband had more opportunities to see Cathy than I did, as she would come to Greens for flowers. Yet, he made sure to tell me when a visit occurred.

I am sorry that Cathy had to suffer from Cancer. I praise God that she now lives free of pain. We hope we have made you proud "Miss Hollins"!

Believe it or not, Cathy was my baton twirling teacher way back in the day and she always told people that when we were visiting! She also touched the heart of my son who struggles with substance abuse at local AA mtgs. We will surely miss her.

We were neighbors and played together when we were children. I remember Buzz taking us to the junior high to jump on the trampoline. Fun times! She consoled me the past few years while our daughter was struggling with substance abuse. Was saddened to hear of her death. My sympathy to her family.

When I e-mailed my son about Cath this is what my daughter in law wrote: I think it says it all: I am so sorry to hear about Cathy. She was one of the first family friends I met when I joined your family and I always appreciated her welcoming nature. Cathy was a triple threat in the best possible way-Tall, Blonde, and Sassy. That's how I will always remember her. Michelle Reeson

I was so sorry to hear about Cathy's passing. I was really touched when I spoke with her at my little brother, Darren's, memorial service and funeral this past July. With everything she was going through...she was so kind and she was so interested in what the rest of my family was up to and also shared stories about "back in the day" when we were involved in the swim program. It was really fun to catch up!
May you be at peace knowing she no longer suffers and that she is in wonderful company.......

I will always remember Cathy from Fremont Memorial Pool. She was always so energetic and upbeat. Many kids benefited from her love of swimming that she was always willing to share with others. May she rest in peace.

Grew up just down the street from Cathy and Cindy. Cindy was my Sunday school teacher at Salem Lutheran with husband John. I was a cage boy for Buzz my freshman year at FJHS('72).
What great trips to K park in his red rambler! Used to raid the apple orchard at their house at night. Thank you! Both girls were great swimmers. The Hollins' were a great Fremont family. Say hi to my brother Pud in heaven. Respectfully-Gregg Kupfer

    Cindy and Family,
We are so sorry about Cathy's passing. But we are so happy you were able to become so close again over the past several years. A sister's love is like no other. She loved her family so much. You all have another soul on the other side looking out for you now. Remember she is still with you in spirit.

    Roger,
I am very sad that you have lost your wife, friend, lover after 10 short years. I was honored to have known and been a friend of Cathy's for over 45 years. We had some really fun times together and not so fun the past few years with her illness. She fought a courageous battle against the cancer never giving in to it. I will miss you my friend and "sister".
  19. Nace (Nicholson) Hopp
To Cathy's Family: Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. What can I say about someone I've known for over 50 years? I'm so grateful to have reconnected with Cathy these past few years. What a caring, giving, strong, courageous example to all of us. I'm holding on to the fun Seahorse times and remembering that dynamite smile. Miss you, Cath.

I'm saddened to hear the loss of a classmate. She was a warm and caring person; in fact many years ago when she was a lifeguard at good old Memorial Pool, she had the guts to try to teach me to swim. Most of you know I broke my neck diving in water as a teenager and she had the patience to get me back in water again; fun stuff and thank God she was around to keep me from drowning again. RIP Cathy!
  22. Kathy Register Shields
Cathy was a great fellow band member in high school. She and I shared many conversations over the JCPenney jewelry counter. I will miss her smile and positive outlook on life.
